Introducing ‘plugin’ | Conference 30.6.2016, Schloss Ringenberg; Organization: Gudrun Bott & Marcus Lütkemeyer;

Commercialization and democratization of art – Survival strategies without self-abandonment? | Conference 6.4.2017, Schloss Ringenberg; Organization: Jari Ortwig (Curator, Cologne); Guests: Katja Diallo (Director Nordkaap, Cologne; Advisory Committee Mondriaan Fonds, Amsterdam), Andreas Schmitz (Entrepreneur, KunstSalon Stiftung, Cologne), Dr. Marcel Schumacher (Di- rector Kunsthaus NRW Kornelimünster, Aachen), Maria Wildeis (Director FAR OFF, Cologne)
The invention of the creative economy, the expansion of the art market and the increasing demand for art to adapt to entrepreneurial strategies lead to the reduction and conditional placing of public funding, allow qualities as re-sultorientation and production to replace process, experiment and failure, and seem to compromise that what makes art authentic – its autonomy.

Resilience and adaptation | Conference 12.4.2018, Schloss Ringenberg; Organization: Alexandra Landré (Curator, Amsterdam, Diepenheim); Guests:
Gabriel Lester (Artist/inventor/film director/teacher/author, Amsterdam), Diana Scherer (Artist, Amsterdam), Peter van der Es & Adam Nillissen (Artists and founders of UNFAIR, Amsterdam).
This conference focused on forms of resilience and adaptation that artists employ to react on the constant changing economic environment. Four Dutch guest speakers gave an insight into their own method of adaptation, influenced by economic challenges, interdisciplinarity and new forms of collaboration. (

Playin’ for Keeps | Conference 21.3.2019, Schloss Ringenberg; Organization: Petra Ponte (Curator, Amsterdam); Guests: Marcel van den Berg (Artist/cook/DJ, Amsterdam), Kees Koenders (Producer and co-founder of music label and arts collective SMIB, Amsterdam), Farida Sedoc (Artist and hustler, Amsterdam).
In an afternoon fueled by tunes and visuals we engaged in a freewheeling conversation about all that Hip Hop culture has to offer. It might appear oxy- moronic that someone who is looking to get paid would turn into the direction of the arts. However, in the unique setting of the South Bronx in the 1970s it was with and through art that young Black and Brown people imagined getting monetary and other gains that wage labor did not offer as Robin D.G. Kelley has argued. We are no longer in the 1970s nor are we in the Bronx for that matter, yet the cultural movement and mentality of Hip Hop is very much alive and could be a source of inspiration if you want to play for keeps within the contradictory contours of capitalism and make an effort to fight the powers that be.

Only for You I Want to Be Beautiful | Conference 24.6.2019, Schloss Ringenberg; Organization: Anne Krönker & Stefan Ramírez Pérez (Artists, Hamminkeln); Guests: Miriam Gossing & Lina Sieckmann (Filmmaker duo, Cologne), Sujin Bae & Jonathan Lemke (Artist couple and performance colleagues, Amsterdam), Stephanie Sczepanek (Performance artist, Münster), Dr. Jörg Albrecht (Author and artistic director Center for Literature - Burg Hülshoff, Havixbeck), Professor Eva Illouz (Professor of Sociology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem).
‘Only for You I Want to Be Beautiful’ brings together different artistic and academic positions dealing with seduction and commodifications of desire. Working with film, performance, theory and literature the invited speakers examine, reflect, criticize and exploit strategies of desire. We look at specific modes of production and commercial strategies of the respective fields. Producers and products are experienced live.

After obtaining the Akademiebrief, the art world awaits with many opportunities to create your art, to start projects with a group of fellow artists, or to do research.Only a few artists will make their living on their art only. However, there is an abundance of galleries, muse- ums, fairs, residencies etc., but there
also are many ways to start your own projects, either individually or with
a group of like-minded people. During this workshop, you will get to know more about the exceptional economy of the arts. As a young artist, you are now being regarded as an entrepreneur. This might even involve tax, legal and copyright affairs, running a studio or finding ways to enhance your art.

Producing art under the contemporary condition of labour | Workshop 11.6.2018, Museum Het Valkhof Nijmegen; Organization:
Iratxe Jaio & Klaas van Gorkum (Artists, Rotterdam); Participants:
Fine art students AKI, ArtEZ Enschede.
Based on the exhibition’s installation in Museum Het Valkhof, the workshop addressed fundamental questions of artistic practice of production under the conditions of an expanded concept of art in Western post-industrial, capitalist societies. In the course of the project, the participants continuously evaluated and optimized the results of the ‘plugin’ try-out platform series. The occasion and starting point were the institutions and players working independently of each other in the field of industrial factory work, leisure activities in the twentieth century, as was negotiated by the work of Jaio & van Gorkum, and contemporary conceptions of how to produce artistic knowledge as an approach of research.
